2008 Senior Olympics (press release from Montgomery County Government)

 Contact:  Sue Tucker, 240-777-6530

For Immediate Release:  November 19, 2007

Maryland Senior Olympics Move to Montgomery County

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and County Council President Marilyn Praisner today announced that Maryland’s Senior Olympic torch has been passed to Montgomery County with games planned for the fall of 2008.

The games have been held in Towson since the first state competition in 1980, where approximately 300 seniors competed.  Today, more than 2,000 athletes over the age of 50 compete in the Maryland Senior Olympics -- considered to be one of the top senior athletic competitions in the nation.  It is the largest competition of its kind in the Northeast region of the United States and ranks in the top five nationally.

“We are excited about providing the opportunity for our active seniors to participate close to home,” said Leggett.  “The addition of the Senior Olympics supports two of my policy initiatives—‘Building Healthy and Sustainable Communities’ and ‘Ensuring Vital Living for All of Our Residents.’”

The Maryland Senior Olympics was created in 1980 through joint efforts of the Baltimore County and Maryland State Commissions on Physical Fitness.    Following the retirement of its two long-time leaders, Bob Zeigler and Bob Eickenberg, the games needed a new home, and Montgomery County enthusiastically accepted the opportunity and challenge of administering the State games.

“We are very excited to have the Maryland Senior Olympics come to Montgomery County,” said Council President Praisner.  “Being fit at all ages is important. The Senior Olympics provide great incentive for many people to stay active—and to have fun doing it.”

Venues around the county will host events such as aquatics, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, shuffleboard, basketball and lawn bowling.  The next National Senior Olympics will be held in August 2009 in San Francisco.  In the past, many Maryland athletes have advanced to the National Senior Games and returned as U.S. champions.

“Our department is proud to have the opportunity to help host this important event in Montgomery County,” said Recreation Director Gabriel Albornoz.  “We look forward to working with all the other partners to help produce a world class event for all of the athletes.”

Ted Wroth, retired from the County’s Recreation Department, is the new executive director of the Maryland Senior Olympics.

bullet2007 Olympics news:

 Senior Athletes:

Phil Adams, the longtime administrator of the Md. Senior Olympics, moved to a new job in Iowa early in March. This event, combined with reduced support from Towson U and reduced sponsorship support, has led to cancellation of the 07 autumn games. Discussions with Salisbury U have led to designation of the upcoming Eastern Shore games (ESSG) as the replacement.

Md Olympians are encouraged to participate; get an application from their website at www.salisbury.edu/seniorgames. The ESSG are a smaller event on the SU campus and proximity makes events fairly easy to reach. I have competed most years, partially because I stay at my Ocean City beach place. It has been fun and a good chance to try different events. So, I recommend participation.

The future of Md Sr Olympics is uncertain; 08 is a nationals’ qualifying year. There must be extensive discussion and negotiations and I am unclear who will be involved. Let's think about solutions and be prepared for changes.
